With the revision of federal OSHA mobile crane regulations, where does certification and training stand with overhead crane owners and users? This session will discuss the application of 1926.1438 to Overhead & Gantry Cranes. Discussions will include the applicability of 1438 to Overhead & Gantry Cranes used in Construction, as well as, the applicability of 1438 to Overhead and Gantry Cranes when used in construction and permanently installed in a facility.

9:45 am -Product Certification – What You Need to Know
Presented by Chris Hess, Manager of Engineering, Harrington Hoists, Inc.
In this session you will learn about OSHA’s “approval” requirement, where in the Code of Federal Regulations this approval requirement exists, and how it translates to equipment in your workplace.  You will also learn about OSHA’s Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) Program, and how it is connected to the approval requirement.  As an employer, you will learn what your responsibilities are as it pertains to the approval requirement, and how to proceed with certification by an NRTL to satisfy the approval requirement.  Finally, you will learn how all of this relates to hoists and cranes.

11:00 am -Best Practices for Structural Inspections of Overhead Cranes
Presented by Gary J. Davis, P.E., Director of Consulting Services, Integrated Machinery Solutions
Gary Davis will begin with an explanation of the importance of structural inspection, including implementing a disciplined plan and prerequisites for a qualified inspector. The presentation will go on to explore, among other things, precautions and planning for very high ambient temperatures. Davis will continue with an exploration of miscellaneous bridge structure inspection points and conclude with a lesson on bridge structure response to lateral loads and skewing.

Mike Parnell will discuss the steps to successfully implement electronic lift planning for your fleet of cranes.  He will explain how electronic lift planning tools can help crane owners communicate with their customer, select the best crane for the job, and minimize lifting hazards by planning ahead. Additionally, he will demonstrate how this tool helps a company set itself apart from the competition, while also maximizing resources.

4:15 pm -Health & Safety Benefits of Automated Material Handling Systems
Presented by Dan Beilfuss, National Sales Manager, Magnetek, Inc.
This presentation includes an overview of automated material handling systems and the traditional benefits of automation, including increased productivity, reduced labor, and improved quality.  It also explores in depth the health and safety benefits of an automated system.  The presentation discusses how an automation initiative can gain the support of key areas including human resources, safety department, and quality assurance.  The presentation will conclude with a question and answer session.

Michael Gelskey Sr., President and CEO, Lift It Manufacturing
Sling inspection should not be subjective or overly complicated. Sling inspection for synthetics allows zero tolerance for defects.  An objective inspection process detailing sling inspection systems, techniques and removal from service criteria will be presented by Michael Gelskey, CEO and founder, Lift-It Mfg. Company, Inc.  Gelskey’s “no-nonsense” approach and proactive measures to prevent sling damage will inform and reduce sling inspection to the “lowest common denominator”; slings are either fit for service or they need to be removed and not used for any application.

9:40 am-Telescopic Hydraulic Gantries – Regulations and Standards
David Duerr, P.E.,  President, 2DM Associates
In the last eight years, new standards that address the manufacture, testing, and use of telescopic hydraulic gantry systems have been published in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.  This session will address the provisions of these standards, what is a requirement verses what is a recommendation, and the actions that contractors should take to comply.

Scott Fleming, Manager of Training and Education, Unirope Limited
Scott Fleming will look at traditional and high performance ropes in use, including the different rope trade names and what they really mean; what rope type is best for your crane; and inspection of rope. He will also address the statement, “A rope lasts until it breaks”, and tells delegates when they should actually replace their rope.

Presented by Mike Keim, Ingersoll Rand  of  the Ergonomics Assist Systems and Equipment (EASE) Council, an industry group council of the MHIA.
Learn how to identify and implement cost-effective workplace improvements through effective ergonomics. Through equipment modifications, better floor space utilization, and process layout, there is a potential to save money in cycle time reduction, injury prevention, and quality enhancements.
